Why does my car keep shutting down?

My car died twice today, once at a stop sign, and once at a red light. I had to turn it off, wait, and then it would start back up. I was sitting in the parking lot frustrated when i noticed the car didnt die. I then put the car in drive and within 5 seconds it kinda sputtered and died. I waited and did it again and the same thing happened.
